The F31 was originally designed for the PRR keystone container service. This 70 ton flat car held 8 keystone container service containers. At the time of its introduction this was the longest car in the PRR freight roster. When a full car load of containers was not typical to many destinations, the existing FM flat cars were more than capable of taking on the task of the keystone container service. The 8 container F31 was retired to m.o.w. service early in its lifespan. Here some were kept as container cars to haul containers for the PRR m.o.w operations. Most were converted to a standard flat car. and 5 were converted to foamite firefighting cars. There were a few more converted to sell to other railroads at a later date when a larger portion of the flat cars went out of service.
The foamite version of the f31A was a firefighting car that the PRR kept in its yards to fight fuel fires. Foamite was a foaming agent added to water to help suppress fuel fires. This specialty car had a old steam locomotive tender fit onto it to act as a water tank, and inside the cabin was the foaming agent in red buckets and pumping equipment. This car is designed to be built in one of 2 manners. The first option is as it would be stored and transported, this is with doors closed and piping stored away. The second option is fire fighting mode. This would be doors open and hoses in place as we have built it in the pictures. I have included many interior details, including the correct wooden bracing inside the car, pump, hoses, foamite can racks, ladders, and a hose reel. The Foamite version also includes a free add on of our firefighting details kit so you can build out a scene as you see fit. We recommend brass details and quality decal kits to bring out the realism of our cars. These are not included in kits at this time.
You will need to provide your wheels and couplers. Bachman 78502 couplers work well, or any of this style.
